I wouldn't consider myself an expert by any means so take this all with a grain of salt:
Most hardstyle DJ's start of with a simple 909 and compress, distort and EQ multiple times until it sounds good. There is a method however, and you do need to know what you're doing. The only way to get good is to practice and practice and train your ears so that you know what sounds good.
You can easily make a kick in Sylenth1. All you have to do is make a bass sound and use a pitch envelope, then tweak and distort..etc. But it's far easier for beginners to use microtonic or drumazon as they are only for drums. Once you make/get a kick that sounds good, you can easily put it in different tracks and change the way it sounds with effects. It is good having one well made kick that you can just modify/tweak to fit your track.
Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try my best to answer them.
You posted this in the wrong forum btw..
